TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has urged regional nations to deepen cooperation to restore stability in the Strait of Hormuz, laying the blame for heightened tensions in the vital shipping lane on "U.S. aggression."
According to Iranian broadcaster IRIB on Tuesday, Araghchi conveyed the message during separate phone conversations on Monday with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
The diplomats discussed bilateral ties alongside the latest developments in the region. Araghchi stressed the importance of reinforcing regional partnership and stepping up joint diplomatic initiatives to foster stability.
He further called for an end to the volatility in the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that the unrest was fueled by aggressive actions from the United States.
A relative calm has held over the region since Friday, when the United States and Iran paused strikes following a 13-day flare-up that erupted on July 11.
Throughout the escalation, Washington launched strikes against Iranian targets, while Tehran retaliated by hitting what it described as U.S. military facilities and equipment across several Arab nations.
Hostilities resumed despite Washington and Tehran signing a memorandum of understanding in June that stipulated a cessation of fighting and the start of negotiations toward a broader agreement to end the war waged by Israel and the United States since February 28.
U.S. President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire void on July 8 following attacks on several tankers in the Strait of Hormuz that Washington attributed to Tehran.
The United States has demanded that Iran cease targeting vessels and guarantee freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. In turn, Iran maintains that shipping traffic in waters bordering its coastline should be regulated through mechanisms under its own control.
