TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made her first phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, following her statement in parliament regarding Taiwan. Takaichi previously mentioned the possibility of Japanese military intervention in the Taiwan crisis, triggering diplomatic tensions with China. According to a report by The Japan Times, the call was initiated by Trump just hours after his conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which the Taiwan issue was discussed.

In an official statement released by the Japanese Prime Minister's Office, Takaichi said she has just finished a phone call with President Trump, initiated at his request. She expressed gratitude for Trump's message and appreciation for the U.S. efforts towards peace in Ukraine.
Takaichi detailed that they exchanged views on strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance and the dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. She mentioned, "I believe that I was able to confirm the close cooperation between Japan and the United States." Takaichi also noted that Trump gave her the freedom to contact him anytime as a "close friend."
China Increases Diplomatic Pressure
According to a statement from the official website of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xi Jinping, in his call with Trump, emphasized the history of collaboration between the two countries. "China and the U.S. fought shoulder to shoulder against fascism and militarism. Given what is going on, it is even more important for us to jointly safeguard the victory of WWII," Xi said. He reiterated that Taiwan's return to China is part of the post-war international order.
Tensions between Tokyo and Beijing have persisted for over two weeks since Takaichi's statement on November 7, when she mentioned that Japan could deploy military forces if the Taiwan crisis threatens national security. Takaichi has repeatedly resisted Beijing's pressure to retract her statement and affirmed that it aligns with Japan's stance.
Japan Deploys Missiles on Yonaguni Island
Earlier, Beijing condemned Tokyo's decision to place missiles at the SDF Base on Yonaguni Island, Okinawa, approximately 110 kilometers from Taiwan. Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning referred to this move as a trigger for regional tensions that worsen military confrontation. He also considered the placement of weapons very dangerous.
Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi refuted these claims. He said that the missiles with a range of about 50 kilometers can reduce the likelihood of armed attacks against Japan. Koizumi added, "The view that it will heighten regional tensions is not accurate."
On Tuesday, the Japanese Ministry of Defense also reported the deployment of fighter jets the day before after detecting a Chinese drone flying between Yonaguni and Taiwan.
