TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has agreed to cooperate with the United Kingdom in the maritime sector, valued at 4 billion pounds (approximately Rp87.39 trillion, assuming 1 pound equals Rp21,848). This agreement is said to allow the UK and Indonesia to develop maritime capabilities for the Indonesian navy and over 1,000 fishing vessels.
"As one of our closest partners in the G20, this strengthens our joint commitment to global stability and reinforces our national security," said UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the official UK Government website on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
Starmer stated that this cooperation will pave the way for greater interoperability and joint exercises between the two navies. He mentioned that this partnership will benefit future generations in both countries by promoting technology transfer and joint research in the practices of building next-generation ships, including through automation and artificial intelligence (AI).
Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the agreement during a phone call with President Prabowo Subianto. Both are scheduled to attend the G20 Summit in South Africa. The UK government and President Prabowo have been discussing this partnership since November of last year.
The construction of these ships will be undertaken by the British defense company, Babcock. The construction will take place in Indonesia involving British expertise. Therefore, this cooperative project will create a thousand job opportunities for the British community. The majority of job opportunities are expected to be available at Babcock's Rosyth shipyard, with the remainder in Bristol and Devonport shipyards.
The UK government stated that this cooperation will bring significant investment to the local shipbuilding industry, revitalize fishing communities, strengthen Indonesia's maritime defense and security, and enhance food security.
Meanwhile, Babcock CEO David Lockwood stated that this agreement is the latest deal signed by the UK with international partners to export defense and maritime capabilities.
Lockwood revealed that previously the UK had cooperated with Norway worth 10 billion pounds to build anti-submarine destroyer ships, as well as an agreement worth 8 billion pounds with Turkey to export 20 Typhoon fighter jets.
President Prabowo stated that this cooperation will mutually drive the economic growth of both countries, create jobs, and enhance the capabilities of Indonesia's shipbuilding and defense industry.
"Equally important, this program will also empower local fishermen and coastal communities by offering significant new economic opportunities," said Prabowo in the same press release.
