TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Zagy Berian, a young individual from Indonesia, has been chosen as the only Southeast Asian representative in the third cohort of the Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change, established by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

According to a press release received by Tempo, Zagy joins 13 other young leaders from various countries to provide practical input and concrete recommendations to accelerate global action on the climate crisis.

The announcement was made on International Youth Day, Tuesday, August 12, 2025, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and the deadline for the submission of new nationally determined contributions (NDCs) aligned with the 1.5°C target.

Representation of Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a region vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, from rising sea levels to extreme weather threatening food systems and livelihoods. Zagy brings a blend of local experience and international networks to this global forum.

He founded the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE), an organization mobilizing thousands of Indonesian youths in the field of renewable energy. Zagy also serves as the Regional Facilitator for the Youth Climate Justice Fund in South Asia, supporting grassroots climate justice movements.

Internationally, he is involved in the youth engagement strategy of the G20 Energy Transition Working Group, alongside the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia and the B20 Task Force on Energy, Sustainability, and Climate, and leads the Southeast Asia Youth Forum on Energy under ASEAN.

"To me, it means driving remarkable climate action through collaboration while ensuring every voice is heard in shaping a more just and sustainable global future," said Zagy.

One of the programs he runs is renewable energy education in Pati, Central Java, in collaboration with farmers to integrate clean energy solutions into sustainable farming practices.

Aside from Zagy, other members of this group include; Angela Busheska (North Macedonia), Ashley Lashley (Barbados), Axel Eriksson (Sweden), Charitie Ropati (United States), Farzana Faruk Jhumu (Bangladesh), Jabri Ibrahim (Kenya), Kantuta Diana Conde (Bolivia), Lena Goings (United States), Marcel Bodewig (Germany), Okalani Mariner (Samoa), Sibusiso Mazomba (South Africa), Txai Surui (Brazil), and Zuzanna Borowska (Poland).

More Space for Youth

António Guterres has expanded the membership of this UN climate advisory group from seven to 14 individuals. He emphasizes that fearless advocacy from the younger generation has become a major force in the fight against the climate crisis.

"This is why I am proud to announce the launch of the third cohort of my Youth Advisory Group on Climate  and to expand its membership from 7 to 14," he said.

Guterres welcomes the formation of this group to provide more space for youth voices and leadership in global climate negotiations.

"To young people everywhere, don’t give up!" he added. This step also responds to a worrisome global trend, namely the shrinking space for civil society and limited funding hindering young activists' full engagement in climate efforts.
