TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry reported that Indonesia’s footwear exports reached US$5.16 billion from January to August 2025, marking an 11.89 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, when exports totaled US$4.61 billion.

“In the second quarter of 2025, the leather, leather goods, and footwear industry grew by 8.31 percent year-on-year, significantly outpacing the national economic growth of 5.12 percent,” said Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in a written statement on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

Agus emphasized that Indonesia’s footwear industry holds strong potential in both domestic and global markets.

Currently, Indonesia ranks sixth among the world’s footwear exporters, with the United States as its largest market, followed by the European Union and several other countries.

According to the Intellectual Property Rights Database, the number of registered and pending trademarks in the footwear category reached 23,010 brands, covering the protection period from December 2021 to December 2031.

Data from Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that Indonesia has 53,333 small-scale leather, leather goods, and footwear businesses, employing 159,454 people. In the medium- and large-scale sector, there are 737 business units with a workforce of 571,156.

To strengthen the industry, the Ministry of Industry inaugurated the Indonesian Footwear Industry Empowerment Center in Sidoarjo, East Java, yesterday.

The center aims to enhance the competence, standards, and competitiveness of Indonesia’s footwear sector.

Agus highlighted that this initiative reflects the Ministry’s implementation of the New National Industrialization Strategy (SBIN), which also serves as a roadmap for Indonesia’s industrial development through 2045.
