TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono met with his Norwegian counterpart, Espen Barth Eide, in Manila to discuss strategic bilateral cooperation on environmental issues, marine aquaculture, and the energy transition.

The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Post-Ministerial Conferences (AMM/PMC) in Manila, the Philippines, on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

During the meeting, both ministers agreed to strengthen collaboration in the aquaculture sector, particularly through the adoption of sustainable fisheries technology and advanced management practices.

They also explored ways to expand cooperation on the energy transition to support Indonesia's broader national agenda for energy and fertilizer self-sufficiency.

"In this regard, Indonesia continues to encourage cooperation in investment, innovation, and technology development with Norway," Sugiono said in an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

Sugiono also expressed appreciation for the long-standing Indonesia-Norway partnership in the forestry sector, which has made tangible contributions to forest conservation and global climate action.

The two ministers further discussed potential joint initiatives involving satellite imagery licenses to enhance forest monitoring, natural resource management, and sustainable development planning.

Eide underscored Indonesia's vital role as one of the world's natural lungs and recognized the country as a key strategic partner in global efforts to combat climate change.

Beyond environmental and economic issues, Sugiono and Eide reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening multilateralism and advocating reforms of the United Nations (UN) system.

"Indonesia continues to push for comprehensive multilateral reform to make the UN more responsive, effective, and capable of addressing global challenges," Sugiono said.
