TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health at Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture is taking steps to equalize chicken meat and egg production outside of Java. "This is to reduce price disparities and maintain national supply stability," said Agung Suganda, the Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, at the Faculty of Animal Science at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

Agung mentioned that egg production in Indonesia currently reaches 6.2 million tons and chicken meat about 3.8 million tons annually, which is sufficient to meet national needs. However, He acknowledged that 63 percent of both commodities' production is in Java because its livestock ecosystem is more developed.

As part of the equalization effort, the government plans to develop production clusters for laying hens and broiler chickens in various regions. The initial phase is directed towards several provinces, including Aceh, Riau, South Sumatra, Lampung, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South Papua, and East Java.

Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture is preparing to strengthen integrated chicken processing in support of this development.

In line with a plan to utilize a budget of Rp20 trillion to support the integration and modernization of the poultry sector, the program includes the construction of 323 facilities for the chicken industry, ranging from rearing to cold storage.

These efforts aim to make the concept of "Every Island Self-Sufficient in Protein" a reality, ensuring that each region can fulfill its own animal protein supply.

According to Agung, the average national price of chicken meat is currently around Rp38,000 per kg, which is still below the government-set reference price of Rp40,000 per kg.

However, Agung mentioned that the price of eggs at the farm level is still below the Purchase Reference Price (HAP). "For the (HAP) price of live chickens, it is Rp25,500 per kg, and for eggs it is Rp26,500 per kg," he said.

He hopes that equalizing production development outside of Java will reduce the price disparity of these commodities.
