TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and Iran mark 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations by launching the archival exhibition at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.

The exhibition, titled "Archives Exhibition on the Occasion of 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations between Indonesia and Iran," showcased documents and photographs depicting the decades of ties between the two countries since 1950.

The exhibition is co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Iranian Embassy. This event will run until December 5.

The Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, emphasized that the relations between the two countries actually date back much further than the official diplomatic relations.

"The relationship between Iran and Indonesia has existed for thousands, or perhaps hundreds, of years. However, the diplomatic relations have only been established officially 75 years ago," he said during the event.

Diplomacy, from Politics to Culture

Indonesia and Iran are currently expanding cooperation in politics, economics, trade, health, research, and education. Both countries also actively coordinate in various forums, including the United Nations, OIC, D8, and BRICS.

Boroujerdi then underscored the history of Indonesia-Iran's close relations in multilateral forums. "Iran and Indonesia have always had very close relations in international organizations. They began working actively together in the Non-Aligned Movement," he said.

Even further, Indonesia and Iran have also strengthened relations through cultural diplomacy, which manifests this year through several events. These include the screening of Indonesian films in Tehran, the 2025 Iran-Indonesia Film Festival in Jakarta, and the launch of a special edition stamp commemorating the 75th year of bilateral relations.

Nostalgia for Boroujerdi

The diplomatic archive exhibition, Boroujerdi noted, only presents a small portion of the collections held by both countries. "There are thousands of documents that we have, and we have to choose only a small portion to display," he said.

For the ambassador, some of the exhibited archives hold personal value. "For me personally, some of them feel like nostalgia. I once served here from 2000 to 2003. So, seeing these archives brings back my own memories," he said.
