TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) reported that 23 mining licenses are located in areas hit by recent floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
“There are a total of 23 mining permits, including both Mining Business Licenses (IUP) and work contracts,” said Dwi Anggia, spokesperson for the Ministry, during a press statement at the ESDM office in Jakarta on Friday, December 5, 2025.
The 23 permits include four holders of Contracts of Work (KK) and 19 IUPs for metal commodities such as gold, iron ore, lead, and zinc, spread across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
“Minister Bahlil Lahadalia will conduct a firm evaluation and impose sanctions on those responsible for environmental damage,” Anggia added.
In Aceh, records show one KK for gold, issued in 2018. In addition, the province has three licenses for gold (issued 2010 and 2017), three licenses for iron (2021–2024), three licenses for iron ore DMP (2011–2020), and two licenses for iron ore (2012–2018)
There is also one contract that spans both Aceh and North Sumatra for lead and zinc, valid since 2018.
North Sumatra holds two contracts for gold DMP (issued 2017 and 2018) and one Iicenses for copper DMP (issued 2017).
In West Sumatra, the Ministry recorded four licenses for iron (2019–2020), one license for iron ore (2013), one license for black tin (2020), and one Ilicense for gold (2019).
Minister Bahlil Lahadalia emphasized that the Ministry is conducting a thorough evaluation of mining activities suspected to have contributed to the flooding and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
“In West Sumatra and Aceh, we are checking operations. In North Sumatra, our evaluation team is actively conducting assessments,” he said.
