TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry is pushing the small and medium-sized batik industry to meet Indonesian National Standards (SNI) to enhance the quality of batik products and compete in the global market. This step is also to ensure the authenticity of the batik production process as the cultural heritage of Indonesia.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that improving the quality standards of batik serves as a protector of cultural identity and a strategy to expand the market. "SNI will strengthen consumer confidence and open up export opportunities," Agus said as quoted from a press release on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

The Ministry of Industry collaborates with the National Standardization Agency (BSN) and the Big Workshop for Standardization and Service of Craft and Batik Industry (BBSPJIKB) to promote the adoption of SNI Batik. According to Agus, collaboration of technical assistance and certification facilitation is key to strengthening the structure of the national batik industry.

The Director General of Small, Medium, and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA), Reni Yanita, explained that batik standards are already outlined in SNI 0239:2019. The standards clarify the classification of hand-drawn batik, stamped batik, and combination batik. The use of hot wax and a canting tool is the main characteristic of authentic batik, including the significance of the resulting motifs.

Reni hopes that standardization will promote competitiveness while preserving cultural values. This step is part of the effort to establish batik as a leading industrial sector that contributes to the regional and national economy.

With SNI, she continued, consumers can distinguish authentic batik from mass-produced printed batik fabrics. "Quality standards protect small and medium batik industry players and ensure that the production process follows the correct guidelines," Reni said.

Previously, the Ministry of Industry and BSN held standardization education through webinars and provided certification assistance. This program took place in Yogyakarta on November 21, 2025, and included technical guidance. A total of 15 small and medium-sized industries participated in the assistance, and seven of them passed the SNI Batik certification.
