TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s national badminton team departed for Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday morning, December 5, via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport ahead of the 2025 SEA Games badminton competition which begins in two days.
Head of Coaching and Performance at the National Training Center, Eng Hian, said the team, led by rising star Alwi Farhan, is in strong physical and mental condition.
“All players are healthy and fully prepared,” he said in a media statement released by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).
“We ask for prayers and support from all Indonesians so we can carry out our mission well and deliver the best achievements for the Red and White,” added Eng Hian, who is commonly known as Didi.
He acknowledged the short gap between departure and the start of competition but said it is not a concern since preparations at home have been extensive.
“We have prepared these athletes comprehensively, from technical and physical training to psychological sessions to strengthen their focus and goals,” he said.
The squad features a mix of experienced names and emerging talents, including several debutants at a multi-sport event.
Badminton remains one of Indonesia’s most reliable medal contributors at the SEA Games, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports has set a target of two gold medals this year. PBSI Secretary-General Ricky Soebagja said the target is intended to motivate the players to train and compete with maximum discipline.
Off the court, PBSI has enhanced support through improved nutrition programs, physiotherapy, video match analysis, and close medical monitoring to optimize player readiness heading into the tournament.
Squad Changes Ahead of Departure
PBSI confirmed last-minute updates to the roster before traveling to Thailand. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung was added to the women’s singles lineup, replacing Thalita Ramadhani Wiryawan from the initial submission in October.
In men’s doubles, Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani replaced Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin, with the adjustment finalized at the end of November.
Eng Hian said the decisions were based on technical and strategic considerations to ensure Indonesia fields the strongest lineup possible in pursuit of its two-gold target.
Badminton at the 2025 SEA Games will take place at Gymnasium 4, Thammasat University Rangsit Campus, Pathum Thani.
Team events will be held from December 6 to 10, followed by individual competitions from December 11 to 14.
