TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hong Kong was hit by torrential rain on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, triggering widespread flooding across the city. According to Al Jazeera, rainfall exceeded 350 millimeters by 02:00 PM local time, making it the heaviest single-day rainfall for August since records began in 1884.

The heavy downpour led to the closure of schools and courts, disrupted hospital operations, and flooded major roads. Some vehicles were reported fully submerged, and several health clinics were shut down due to the extreme weather.

Black Rainstorm Alert Issued for Fourth Time in a Week

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) issued a black rainstorm warning at 05:50 AM, extending it until 05:00 PM As reported by Xinhua, this marks the fourth black rainstorm alert issued in just eight days.

HKO explained the significance of the warning: "This is the highest level in the observatory's three-tier heavy rain alert system. This indicates that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 70 mm in an hour, and is likely to continue."

According to Hong Kong Free Press, this is the first time in history that four black rainstorm warnings have been issued within a single week. The observatory noted that the northern New Territories, including Pat Heung, Kam Tin, and Sheung Shui, were among the worst affected areas.

Transport and Public Services Hit Hard

Between 05:00 AM and noon, HKO recorded over 9,600 lightning strikes. Persistent heavy rain raised the risk of serious road flooding and traffic jams, prompting public warnings.

The storm also disrupted air travel, with up to 20 percent of flights canceled. Authorities lowered speed limits on multiple roads due to poor visibility.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government has activated an emergency coordination center and opened temporary shelters for residents in need.

This latest extreme weather event comes just days after flash floods swept through southern China, killing five people in Guangdong Province and prompting the deployment of over 1,300 rescue personnel.
