TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has disclosed the health issues most commonly affecting school-age children. These findings stem from free health check-ups (CKG) conducted between January 1 and July 14, 2026.
Over the first seven months of 2026, the school CKG program screened 8,824,185 students across 96,567 schools in 511 regencies and cities.
According to the Government Communication Bureau (Bakom), dental caries or cavities emerged as the most prevalent health condition among students. "About 40.8 percent of students suffer from dental caries," Bakom Deputy III Kurnia Ramadhana said in a statement on Friday, July 24, 2026. That percentage translates to approximately 3.6 million students.
Other frequently identified conditions include anemia among teenage girls and hypertension. Approximately 27.3 percent (2.4 million) of teenage girls were found to have anemia, while 21.7 percent (1.91 million) of all screened students exhibited elevated blood pressure or hypertension.
Additional health concerns included impacted cerumen, or earwax buildup, detected in 6.0 percent (529,000) of students. "Furthermore, 6.7 percent (591,000) of students were diagnosed as obese," Kurnia added.
The government plans to expand free health screening services across schools later this year. "Overall, the target for the school CKG program in 2026 is 50,255,073 students across 303,263 schools," Kurnia said.
The school-based CKG program was launched nationwide on August 4, 2025. The initiative covers primary, junior high, and senior high schools, as well as special needs schools (SLB) and Islamic boarding schools, targeting youth aged 7 to 17.
The free health check-up is one of President Prabowo Subianto's priority "quick win" programs. Beyond academic institutions, CKG screenings are also offered to the general public through community health facilities.
