TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Secretary General of the Gerindra Party, Sugiono, has urged Pati Regent Sudewo, a member of his party, not to implement policies that burden the public.
Sugiono said he is closely monitoring the demonstrations in Pati, Central Java, which erupted over the controversial 250 percent increase in the Rural and Urban Land and Building Tax (PBB-P2) rates.
"As the Secretary General of the Central Executive Board of the Gerindra Party, I have conveyed to Regent Sudewo to consider the aspirations of the people so that the policies adopted do not add to their burden," Sugiono said in a written statement on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
Regent Sudewo previously implemented the contentious PBB-P2 hike, which he said was necessary to increase Pati Regency’s revenue. He argued that the region had not adjusted tax rates for decades, despite needing substantial funds for infrastructure development and public service programs.
However, residents rejected the decision, calling it an added hardship during the current economic difficulties. Sudewo initially refused to reverse the increase and even challenged the protesters, stating he would confront even 50,000 demonstrators if necessary.
The policy drew criticism from multiple parties. Protests on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, in front of the Regent’s Office escalated, with police using tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds demanding Sudewo’s resignation.
At the same time, the Pati Regional Representative Council established a Special Committee on the Inquiry Rights for Sudewo’s Impeachment, citing alleged violations of his oath and responsibilities as regent.
Sugiono also recalled a message from Gerindra Party Chairperson Prabowo Subianto to all regional leaders in the party, emphasizing that any policy must take into account its impact on the most vulnerable citizens.
"Our party is a party born and grown from that struggle," said the Foreign Minister.
