TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Stargazers across Australia are set to witness the Buck Moon, July’s full moon, which will illuminate the night sky at the end of the month. Although the full moon will officially reach peak illumination shortly after midnight on Thursday, July 30, 2026, it will appear full to the naked eye on the evenings before and after the peak, offering skywatchers a broad viewing window.
The July full moon is the second-highest full moon of the year, following June’s Strawberry Moon. As reported by Time Out, the Buck Moon will reach its peak at 12:35 a.m. AEST on July 30 in New South Wales, but observers are expected to enjoy the best views after sunset on Wednesday, July 29, and Thursday, July 30.
What Is the Buck Moon?
The name Buck Moon originates from Native American traditions in North America, referring to the time of year when young male deer, or bucks, begin growing new antlers. Although the seasonal event does not coincide with Australia's winter, the traditional name has continued to be used internationally for the July full moon.
Each month's full moon carries a traditional name linked to seasonal events, agriculture, or wildlife, making the Buck Moon part of a long-standing lunar naming tradition that remains popular among astronomers and skywatchers.
When Is the Best Time to Watch It?
Skywatchers in New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and Tasmania can begin watching the moon rise from around 4:45 p.m. AEST on July 29. Because the moon rises shortly after sunset during a full moon phase, it often appears especially large and dramatic while still close to the horizon.
According to Nine.com.au, astrophysicist Rebecca Davies of Swinburne University of Technology said no telescope or special equipment is needed to enjoy the event.
"The great thing about the moon is it's easy to see from anywhere," Davies said, adding that the moon usually looks most spectacular when it first rises above the eastern horizon.
Where Can You Get the Best View?
Clear skies remain the most important factor for viewing the Buck Moon. Observers are encouraged to choose locations with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon, while darker areas away from city lights can provide sharper visibility and a brighter appearance.
Because the Buck Moon travels relatively high across the sky during July, it will remain visible for much of the night after rising.
Does the Buck Moon Have Astrological Meaning?
Some astrologers associate the July 2026 full moon with the zodiac sign Aquarius, suggesting it symbolizes independence, personal growth, and reassessing relationships. These interpretations belong to astrology rather than astronomy and are not based on scientific evidence.
When Is the Next Full Moon?
The next full moon after the Buck Moon will be the Sturgeon Moon, which is expected to reach peak illumination on August 28, 2026.
