TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French national team midfielder Michael Olise made history at the 2026 World Cup by breaking the record for most assists in a single World Cup, previously held by Brazilian legend Pele since 1970.
The record was set during France's 4-6 defeat to England in the third-place playoff match at the 2026 World Cup on Sunday. Olise, who came on as a substitute early in the second half for Rayan Cherki, recorded an assist for Kylian Mbappé's goal.
The assist was Olise's seventh of the tournament. Thus, he finished as the top assist provider at the 2026 World Cup and earned the title of tournament assist king.
Olise was significantly ahead of his closest competitors. Kylian Mbappé, Bruno Guimaraes, Martin Odegaard, and Brahim Diaz each had only four assists throughout the competition.
Not only was he the best player in the 2026 World Cup, but his seven assists also helped Olise break the record for most assists in a single World Cup finals.
Previously, the record was held by Pele, who recorded six assists while leading Brazil to victory in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. That record stood for 56 years before being broken by Olise at the 2026 World Cup.
This achievement capped Olise's impressive performance throughout the tournament. Although France had to settle for a fourth-place finish, the 24-year-old ended the 2026 World Cup as the all-time record holder for assists in a single World Cup.
