TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – French football legend Zinedine Zidane is set to become the next head coach of the France national team after reportedly agreeing to a contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 FIFA World Cup, ending years of speculation over his future, according to Goal.com.
The French Football Federation (FFF) has scheduled a press conference for July 28 to unveil Didier Deschamps' successor. While the federation has yet to officially name the new coach, multiple reports have identified Zidane as the incoming manager.
Accroding to RFI, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano wrote on Instagram that the agreement between Zidane and the FFF has been finalized, with the 54-year-old expected to lead Les Bleus until June 2030.
Zidane will replace Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after 14 years in charge following France's fourth-place finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During his tenure, Deschamps guided France to the 2018 World Cup title, the 2022 World Cup final, and the 2021 UEFA Nations League crown.
Zidane's Coaching Journey From Real Madrid to Les Bleus
Zidane has not coached since leaving Real Madrid in 2021 following his second spell with the Spanish club.
Despite several offers from Europe's top clubs, he had long been linked with the France job and openly described it as his preferred destination.
During two spells at Real Madrid, Zidane won three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018, as well as two La Liga championships, establishing himself as one of the most successful managers in the club's history.
As a player, Zidane remains one of France's greatest football icons, leading the country to victory at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000 before winning the 2002 UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid.
If confirmed by the FFF next week, Zidane will begin a new era for France with the UEFA Nations League, Euro 2028, and the 2030 FIFA World Cup as his first major targets.
