TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Landslides and floods triggered by heavy rain have struck Sri Lanka. More than 40 people have died. According to Al Jazeera, the authorities have stopped passenger trains and closed roads in several parts of the country, officials said.
The government's Disaster Management Center said on Thursday that 25 people were reported dead in the tea-producing mountainous areas of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya in central Sri Lanka, about 186 miles east of the capital, Colombo. Another 21 people are missing due to landslides in the same area, while 10 others are injured.
Sri Lanka has been experiencing bad weather since last week. Heavy rain over the weekend worsened the situation, causing a catastrophe. The rain has caused floods that have engulfed houses, fields, and roads.
Reservoirs and rivers have overflowed, blocking roads. Several main roads connecting provinces have been closed, officials said.
The authorities have halted trains in some areas in the mountainous region after rocks, mud, and trees fell onto the railway tracks. Local television showed workers clearing debris. In some areas, floods have inundated the tracks.
Local television showed air force helicopters rescuing three people stranded on the roofs of flooded houses while the navy and police used boats to evacuate residents. Footage also showed a car swept away by floods near the town of Ampara, about 256 miles east of Colombo, killing three passengers.
The death toll from this week's weather is the highest since June last year, when 26 people died due to heavy rain. In December, 17 people died due to floods and landslides. The worst floods of the century occurred in June 2003, killing 254 people.
Sri Lanka depends on seasonal monsoon rains for irrigation and hydroelectric power. However, experts have warned that the country is facing more frequent floods due to the climate crisis.
