Ferry Carrying 53 Passengers Sinks in Bali Strait

7 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A passenger motorboat (KMP) Tunu Pratama Jaya, carrying dozens of passengers, sank in the Bali Strait on Wednesday night, July 2, around 11:35 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). Wahyu Setia Budi, Coordinator of the Banyuwangi Search and Rescue or SAR Post, confirmed the news.

"KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya departed from Ketapang Port, Banyuwangi Regency, at approximately 10:56 PM WIB, heading to Gilimanuk Port, Jembrana Regency, Bali," Wahyu said on early Thursday, July 3, 2025.

Wahyu mentioned that the manifest data for KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya showed it was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles.

The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Banyuwangi, East Java, deployed a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) to search for the victims of the sinking passenger motorboat in the Bali Strait.

Wahyu said that local Basarnas teams began searching for the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya passengers shortly after receiving information about the ferry sinking on the Ketapang-Gilimanuk route.

"But, we have not yet found any passengers from the ship, and there are also obstacles from the weather and waves in the Bali Strait, reaching about 2.5 meters, making it difficult for the SAR team," he explained.

In addition to Basarnas Banyuwangi deploying an RIB, Wahyu also stated that the Maritime Security and Safety Agency (KPLP) dispatched a ship for the search.

"We are also assisted by Basarnas Denpasar and the Jembrana SAR Post (Bali) in the search for the victims of the sunken ship," said Wahyu.
