TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Drone Emprit, Indonesia's social media monitoring and analytics platform, conducted a study on online interactions related to the raising of the One Piece flag, which drew attention ahead of Indonesia's 80th Independence Day on August 17.
One of the findings in Drone Emprit's research was the appearance of the hashtag #SaatnyaGantiPrabowoGibran (in English: #TimeToChangePrabowoGibran) in discussions about the One Piece flag.
However, Drone Emprit noted that this hashtag only circulated within certain online clusters.
The social media monitoring platform observed that the hashtag did not reach a broader audience. Narratives calling for a change in government leadership failed to gain significant traction among the general public.
"This indicates a lack of strength as a collective movement," wrote Drone Emprit in its report, which was published on the @DroneEmpritOffc account on Monday, August 4, 2025.
Drone Emprit also reported that online discussions about the One Piece flag were largely driven by public anger toward the government's response. Many users expressed frustration over the government's perceived suppression of free expression, overreaction to fictional symbols, disregard for symbols of people’s resistance, and the use of threats or repressive actions against those who raised the flag.
In contrast, some users expressed admiration and joy over the act, viewing the raising of the pirate flag from the Japanese anime series as a creative and peaceful form of expression.
Another finding indicated that the One Piece flag is being used as a symbol of criticism to highlight social, economic, and structural inequality.
The widespread support on social media suggests that the act of raising the flag is being interpreted more as a form of peaceful resistance rather than a subversive act.
Drone Emprit also found no evidence of a coordinated effort behind the flag-raising movement. "These posts appear to be spontaneous and individual, without any ideological message or collective call for extreme political action," the report stated.
The study analyzed online conversations related to the One Piece flag from July 26 to August 4. During this period, there were a total of 14,182 mentions across platforms such as X, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and various online media outlets.
