TEMPO.COJakarta - The presence of tropical cyclone Fina in Indonesia's western waters continues to generate high waves across various domestic sea lanes. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for sailors, effective from November 24 to 27, 2025.

BMKG forecaster Ryan Putra Pambudi explained that wind patterns across the archipelago are influenced by cyclone Fina, which has an observed pressure of 962 hPa. In the northern part of Indonesia, winds are moving from the northwest to the northeast at speeds of 6-30 knots. Winds in the southern region exhibit similar speeds while moving toward the southwest.

"The highest wind speed is observed in the Malacca Strait and the North Natuna Sea," Ryan stated in a written release on Monday, November 24, 2025.

High Wave Warning (2.5 to 4.0 meters)

Referring to the BMKG team's mapping, waves measuring 2.5 to 4.0 meters are likely to occur over the coming days in the areas of North Natuna Sea and Indian Ocean (west of the Nias Islands and west of Aceh).

"The potential for high waves in these areas could pose risks to maritime safety," he cautioned.

The BMKG team also alerted fishermen and sailors to the presence of moderate waves, ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters, in several other areas:

- South of Java (from Banten to the south of East Java)

- Karimata Strait and Makassar Strait

- Sulawesi Sea

- Waters bordering the Pacific Ocean around Maluku and Papua

Ryan issued specific advisories for various vessel types, urging caution based on wind and wave thresholds:

- Small fishing vessels are called to exercise extreme caution regarding winds exceeding 15 knots and wave heights surpassing 1.25 meters.

- Barge ships must maintain vigilance against wind speeds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights rising above 1.5 meters.

- Captains of ferry services are advised to be cautious when wind speeds exceed 21 knots and wave heights reach 2.5 meters.

- Larger fleets, including cargo freighters and cruise liners, must rigorously monitor weather updates when wind velocities surpass 27 knots and wave heights reach 4 meters.
