TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Mayor of Cirebon, Effendi Edo, denied that Land and Building Tax (PBB) surges of up to 1,000 percent in the city. According to him, the city government is reviewing residents' demands to reduce the tax rate.
"There is indeed a tax rate hike, but not up to 1,000 percent," said Edo on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
According to Edo, the city government has already set the PBB hike since last year. "Long before I assumed office as the mayor," he said. "I've only been leading for five months."
Edo said the tax hike came from the Ministry of Home Affairs, who provided eight options, which were then integrated into the Cirebon City Regulation No. 1 of 2024 and became the basis of the property tax rate set by the former Acting Mayor of Cirebon.
Now, he said, the government is reviewing the residents' demand to revise the existing regulations, the process of which is likely to be completed this week. "We are formulating this according to the communities' wishes. InsyaAllah, there will be changes," said Edo.
The property tax hike in Cirebon has been in effect since last year, when residents staged a protest on June 6, 2024. They were protesting the high property tax hike imposed by the Cirebon City Government.
"Our struggle to demand the cancelation of the property tax hike in Cirebon has been going on for a while," said the spokesperson for Paguyuban Pelangi Cirebon, Hetta Mahendrati, who also took part in the demonstration.
Hetta said the property tax hike ranged from 150 to 1,000 percent and was applied uniformly among the residents. "In 2023, we were just finished with the pandemic, was it wise to raise the tax by up to 1,000 percent? The government said the economy improved by 10 percent, but from where? From ground zero?" Hetta said.
Meanwhile, a taxpayer, Darma Suryapranata, revealed that his property tax bill soared drastically in 2024. In 2023, his tax bill was Rp6.2 million, and it skyrocketed to an "unreasonable and burdensome" rate of Rp65 million.
"I could probably pay that, but then i couldn't eat. How much is the income of parents like I am?" he said. However, in the end, Surya opts for payment after getting a. "I paid Rp18 million," said Surya.
Meanwhile, Sulaiman, a resident of Pekalangan, Cirebon, also expressed surprise that his property tax bill in 2024 reached Rp1.5 million. "In 2023, my PBB bill was only around Rp400,000," he said, adding that he paid after getting a discount.
