China: Japan's Plan to Place Missiles Near Taiwan is Provocative

TEMPO.COJakarta - Japan's plan to deploy missiles near Taiwan is an attempt to provoke a military confrontation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on Monday, November 24, 2025.

The Japan Times newspaper, as reported by Antara on Sunday, reported that Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated that Tokyo remains committed to deploying intermediate-range missiles on Yonaguni Island, which is about 110 kilometers from Taiwan.

Mao said that Japan's plan to deploy offensive weapons on the island near Taiwan is a deliberate attempt to escalate regional tensions and provoke a military conflict.

"Considering Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks regarding Taiwan, this move is extremely dangerous and demands greater vigilance from neighboring countries and the international community," Mao said.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman also accused right-wing factions in Japan of trying to encourage the abandonment of the country's pacifist constitution, thereby further sliding Japan toward militarism and dragging Tokyo and the region toward disaster.

Mao said that China will never allow right-wing forces in Japan to reverse history, nor will it tolerate foreign interference in Taiwan affairs or the resurgence of Japanese militarism.

"China has the determination and capability to defend its national territorial sovereignty," he said.

Diplomatic tensions escalated after Takaichi stated on November 7 that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan would create a "survival-threatening situation," which would force Japan to respond.

His remarks sparked condemnation from China and the opposition party in Japan.

In response, the Chinese Foreign Ministry summoned Japanese Ambassador to Beijing Kenji Kanasugi.

Meanwhile, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong expressed a strong protest against the prime minister's comments. China also urged its citizens to refrain from traveling to Japan.
