An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 hit the city of Bekasi and its surrounding areas in Indonesia on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The earthquake was reported to have occurred at around 7:54 PM Western Indonesian Time.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake was located 14 KM southeast of Bekasi Regency, West Java. Meanwhile, the earthquake's epicenter was 10 KM deep.

BMKG urged residents of Bekasi and its surrounding areas to remain cautious of potential aftershocks.
Meanwhile, a 31-year-old resident named Hilda claimed to have felt the earthquake. She immediately went out of her house when she felt the earthquake. "I felt the earthquake. I just arrived home from work, and when the earthquake happened, I ran out immediately," she said.
Hilda mentioned that the earthquake lasted for about 5 seconds. After going outside, the neighbors also went out and only returned home when the earthquake was no longer felt. "When it stopped, we immediately went back inside the house. Luckily, there was no damage," she said.
School Buildings to District Hall Damaged by Bekasi Earthquake
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that several buildings in the Karawang Regency, West Java, were affected by the 4.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Bekasi Regency on Wednesday night, August 20, 2025. Two villages in the Karawang region suffered damages after the earthquake shook the Bekasi, Jakarta, and Depok areas.
The Head of Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Management of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, stated that residential buildings in the Karawang region suffered damages due to the earthquake. This report is based on a rapid assessment conducted by the Rapid Response Team (TRC) of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Karawang Regency.
"Residential buildings in Kampung Jungkur, Tegalwaru District, and Kampung Kutamaneuh, Tegalwaru District, were found to have damages in their walls," Muhari said when contacted by Tempo on Wednesday night.
SD Negeri Kutamaneuh 2 in Tegalwaru, Karawang Regency, also suffered damages to the ceiling and walls of the classrooms due to the earthquake. Muhari mentioned that the desks in several classrooms also suffered damages from falling debris of the collapsed walls.
In addition, a multipurpose building in Pangkalan District, Karawang Regency, also suffered damages. Muhari mentioned that the multipurpose building experienced damages to the ceiling of the hall. "Fortunately, during the earthquake, there were no human activities in the school or the district hall, so there were no casualties," he said.
