TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has released a report regarding the handling of simultaneous floods and landslides in four districts/cities in the North Sumatra region on Tuesday, November 25. Head of the BNPB Data and Information Center, Abdul Muhari, stated that the four affected areas include Sibolga, North Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli, and South Tapanuli. These four areas have been hit by extreme weather conditions over the past two days.
"From South Tapanuli, floods and landslides have caused the death of eight residents," Abdul said in a statement received by Tempo on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
In South Tapanuli, floods and landslides have resulted in the deaths of eight people, 58 injuries, and the displacement of 2,851 residents. He also mentioned that there were injured victims in the Sibolga area. The victims are currently receiving medical treatment from health teams. The disaster has also caused material losses in Sibolga, including three residential buildings and one shop building.
"Several road accesses have also been affected, disrupting the mobility of residents," Abdul added.
In North Tapanuli, floods and landslides have caused material losses to 50 residential buildings and even severed two connecting bridges. According to Abdul, the most significant material losses were recorded in Central Tapanuli, with 1,902 residential buildings affected by this disaster.
"All data, such as the number of residents and affected areas, are still temporary and may undergo further developments based on the results of ongoing rapid assessments in the field," said Abdul.
Prior to this, heavy rainfall in several areas in North Sumatra since last Saturday until Tuesday has led to floods and landslides. Apart from Central and South Tapanuli, floods and landslides have also occurred in Mandailing Natal Regency; North Tapanuli; Nias; Gunung Sitoli City; and Sibolga.
In North Tapanuli, Aek Mahassan River overflowed, submerging around 60 residential homes. Meanwhile, two landslide spots in Robean Village affected two houses and caused injuries to a family.
