TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australian emergency management officials said Monday that a trial of a new national emergency alert system was successful after it was broadcast to 94 percent of mobile towers.
As ANTARA reported, Australia's National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) conducted a nationwide trial of its AusAlert mobile alert system on Monday, issuing an alert to all mobile devices at 2:00 p.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time (11:00 a.m. Indonesian time).
Speaking after the trial, Australian Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain said the signal was successfully broadcast by 94 percent of targeted mobile towers, exceeding the NEMA benchmark of 90 percent.
"The test has shown its capability to deliver emergency warnings at pace and scale," McBain said. "This has been a very successful test. We have reached more towers than we anticipated."
The AusAlert system, which will become operational in October, was developed following a landmark royal commission into national disaster management established in 2020. The commission identified the need for a more modern, reliable, and consistent national warning capability.
The new system uses cellular broadcast technology to send alerts to mobile devices instead of SMS alerts, which rely on cellular networks.
Patrick Hetherington, NEMA's acting coordinator general, said the agency would assess all data from Monday's test to make any necessary modifications before the system is fully rolled out.
