TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto invited members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to join hands in addressing a number of cross-border crimes. According to him, smuggling, scams, money laundering, human trafficking, and narcotics can disrupt the economic stability of the region.
Prabowo conveyed this message during his address at the first session of the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting (AELM) for the APEC Summit 2025 at the Hwabaek International Convention Centre (HICO) in Gyeongju, South Korea on Friday, October 31, 2025.
"We cannot tackle these dangers alone. Smuggling, scams, money laundering, human trafficking, and narcotics are real threats to our economic future," said Prabowo in an official statement from the Presidential Secretariat.
The head of state mentioned Indonesia's current endeavors in combating corruption and greedy tycoons, adding that the country is ready to serve as a "bridge builder" between advanced and developing economies to face global challenges.
"We are fighting against corruption, scams, and greedy businessmen who hinder real growth," he said, adding that these experiences may position Indonesia as the bridge between advanced and developing economies.
Prabowo also emphasized that economic growth must be inclusive and benefit all parties. According to him, public-private collaboration must be oriented to "people-centric cooperation and economy."
"APEC must ensure that trade and investment benefits reach everyone, leaving no economy behind," said Prabowo.
The former Defense Minister also outlined the steps Indonesia has taken to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives, as well as enhancing digital and financial access that helps integrate MSMEs into the global value chain.
"In Indonesia, we implement these principles through national programs that empower small businesses and cooperatives to optimize their potential, improve welfare, and contribute to a more sustainable future," he said.
Prabowo Subianto attended the APEC Summit 2025 in Gyeongju on Friday, October 31, 2025, after landing in South Korea the previous day. He was accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
