TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Adventure tourism has become a popular trend among global travelers, presenting an opportunity for Indonesia to attract many visitors due to its high potential in natural and cultural tourism.
Budi Supriyanto, the Assistant Deputy of Industry Management at the Ministry of Tourism, stated that this trend has emerged because travelers are not only seeking entertainment but also experiences.
"Adventure tourism has become a global trend because travelers are looking for challenging, authentic, and memorable experiences related to culture," said Budi Supriyanto during the National Conference of IATTA held in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
Budi highlighted that Indonesia has enormous potential as the best destination for adventure tourism, featuring numerous adventurous locations in mountains, seas, forests, and cultural sites. This potential can be developed into world-class tourism products.
He mentioned that Indonesia's position can be strengthened with the title of Asia's Leading Adventure Tourism Destination, which was achieved in the 2024 World Travel Awards. "This title solidifies our position as the primary destination for adventure tourists in the Asia region," he said.
Boosting the Regional Economy
This vast potential is believed to boost the regional economy and create job opportunities. He also emphasized the strategic role of adventure tourism in developing policies that support the growth of a sustainable and responsible tourism ecosystem.
The Ministry of Tourism, he said, continues to encourage all industry players to have legal business permits and to implement tourism certification standards to mitigate various potential risks.
However, there are challenges to be faced, such as ensuring safety, preserving natural balance, and enhancing the professionalism of human resources.
"Therefore, we need to collaborate between the government, industry, and the community for the continued development of adventure tourism and its broad benefits," said Budi.
The Role of Tourism in GDP
Budi also emphasized that the tourism sector contributes significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) and helps maintain the resilience of the national economy amid global economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
He revealed that, compared to the same period in 2024, foreign tourist visits had increased by 9.44 percent and domestic tourist movements had grown by 25.93 percent as of June 2025. "Although we also experienced distortions, such as what PHRI indicated that even though the visitation rates increased, only 50 percent entered legal accommodations," he said.
