TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Data on current volcanic activity shows a list of 10 active volcanoes in Indonesia, spread across various regions and islands.
This figure is part of a total of 127 active volcanoes stretching from Sabang to Merauke, according to data from the Multiplatform Application for Geohazard Mitigation and Assessment in Indonesia.
Out of these 127 volcanoes, at least 26 are currently under monitoring by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, part of the Geological Agency.
Among them, one volcano is at Alert Level (Level IV), two are at Watch Level (Level III), and 23 are at Caution Level (Level II).
List of 10 Active Volcanoes in Indonesia
The following are ten active volcanoes currently being monitored by Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation as of Monday, August 4, 2025:
1. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, East Nusa Tenggara
Located in East Flores, this volcano is classified as Type A, meaning it has erupted at least once since 1600 AD.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is currently at Alert Level due to increased volcanic activity, including a recent eruption. Observations on August 4 recorded one volcanic tremor with an amplitude of 4.4 mm and one distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 7.4 mm.
2. Mount Ili Lewotolok, East Nusa Tenggara
Situated in Lembata, this Type A volcano is currently at Watch Level. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid a 3-kilometer radius from the volcano’s active center.
On August 4, seven eruption earthquakes were recorded with amplitudes ranging from 8.5 to 19.3 mm and durations of 28 to 35 seconds. One distant tectonic earthquake was also detected, with an amplitude of 2.4 mm.
3. Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta and Central Java
One of the more well-known volcanoes, Mount Merapi is also classified as Type A and is currently at Watch Level.
Between 12:00 PM and 06:00 PM WIB on August 4, observations recorded 21 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes between 2 and 9 mm and durations ranging from 39.37 to 220.7 seconds.
One shallow volcanic earthquake was also recorded, with an amplitude of 35 mm and a duration of 14.7 seconds.
4. Anak Krakatau, Lampung
Anak Krakatau, situated in South Lampung, is currently at Caution Level. On August 3, monitoring recorded three volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes between 27 and 44 mm.
5. Anak Ranakah, East Nusa Tenggara
Anak Ranakah, located in Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, is also at Caution Level. Observations on August 3 noted weather conditions ranging from clear to overcast, with air temperatures between 15 and 24 degrees Celsius.
6. Mount Awu, North Sulawesi
Situated in the Sangihe Islands, Mount Awu is currently on Caution Level. Observers recorded at least 31 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes between 3 and 48 mm, as well as two volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes ranging from 8 to 30 mm.
7. Banda Api, Maluku
Located in Central Maluku, Banda Api is also at Caution Level. Observations noted two distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes between 4 and 7 mm and durations ranging from 42.35 to 155.14 seconds.
8. Mount Bromo, East Java
Located in Probolinggo, Mount Bromo remains under observation due to its Caution Level status. Despite varying weather conditions, including clear and rainy periods with temperatures between 11 and 19 degrees Celsius, one continuous tremor earthquake was detected with amplitudes ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 mm.
9. Mount Burni Telong, Aceh
In Central Aceh, this volcano is also at Caution Level. At least ten volcanic earthquakes and two shallow volcanic earthquakes were recorded, with the latter showing amplitudes of 35 mm.
10. Mount Dempo, South Sumatra
Located in Empat Lawang, Pagar Alam City, Mount Dempo is currently at Caution Level. Recent activity includes two distant tectonic earthquakes and one shallow volcanic earthquake.
